Through teach-ins, youth develop a critical lens for examining historical accounts that continue to shape our communities, including legislation, narratives, and current issues. Youth learn about untaught Asian American history and the history of cross-racial solidarity through group research, guest speakers, films, and more.

ASA youth advocate at district school board meetings for the protection of immigrant students and the adoption of Asian American history courses in all schools across Georgia.

Asian American History Advocacy Timeline

Aug 2022 - May 2023 School Year

Through the advocacy of youth and collaboration with ASA, GCPS pilots the first Asian American history elective course in the state of Georgia. GCPS pilots professional learning on culturally responsive teaching and bias training for staff.

March 2022

ASA and GCPS Director of Curriculum Design meet to discuss what an inclusive K-12 curriculum should look like with both an Asian American history course and inclusion of Asian American history in existing U.S. history curriculum.

Nov 2021

ASA youth speak at the Gwinnett County Public School (GCPS) January Board Meeting to advocate for an inclusive K-12 history curriculum.
